Patterns of the Sand
All around, nature reveals incredible structures, patterns, and fractals. Only in recent decades has humanity developed the ability to code parametric designs that resemble those seen in the natural world. These naturally occurring systems of pattern often invite long contemplation and visual appreciation.
Mathematics appears both in nature and in art.
The patterns in the following project were collected from the beach in Qurum, Muscat, Oman. A wadi stream flows into the sea, carving intricate designs into the sand. During low tide, the shapes left behind were gathered and brought into the studio.
In the workshop, these patterns were transformed into large-scale paper reliefs designed for display indoors, allowing the creative logic of nature to be present within interior spaces.
The series includes multiple works:
1.5 × 1 m , a 1 × 1 m piece, a 1.5 × 1.5 m work, and six smaller works (each 50 × 50 cm), each capturing a unique rhythm found in the sand.
